I stole this title because I love this article by Penelope Trunk, “How To Be A Freelance Writer Without Starving.”
The article caught my eye because that’s what I’m doing with some of my time. I charge $10 – $12 per 600 words but it takes me a while. I would starve if that was my only source of moula!
But writing is something I am compelled to do. I do a lot of it just for free for me
My best writing has sort of an element of what I call “From The Kingdom.” When I write well, I have a sense of purpose for writing, but not my purpose. It’s purpose-driven ”from the Kingdom.”
In my personal life and in my professional life, writing is a discipline that definitely tends to be disorganized activity. So today, I’m beginning to get organized in this part of my life, and I’m getting organized with purpose! It feels really great.
Remember, purpose is passion. To live with passion, we have to have purpose, a “why” that get’s stronger and stronger.
Take it from me, if you are disorganized by nature (and I am) then the very best way to become organized and experience the kind of peace and confidence that comes with it is to discover the “why.”
WHY do you want to be organized? Why do you want to write? Why do you want your purse to be organized? Why do you want your stacks of paper to be organized?
Why do I want to be a freelance writer without starving? I’ll tell you this, just asking the question will get me closer not only to a stronger “why” and therefore a much better product (article, blog, book) but that, in turn, will lead to more moula.
Money is really just one way to measure the value you and I contribute to the world, but it’s a pretty incredible powerful ”why” too.
If we want to be a force for good and not for evil, then making money as a writer or as a butcher, baker or candlestick maker, my belief is that we won’t starve.
What do you think about that?
