Four Purpose-Driven Files For Life
I suggest that you organize your professional life into no more 4 purpose-driven catagories. Think of a filing cabinet outside for this part of your life. Breathe in the fresh air as you decide how to label these four drawers.
The labels will change over time as you refine and organize your professional life so don’t take more than 10 minutes for this exercise.
Before I retired, my ”fresh air files”
for one year were labeled like this!
- Nursing Profession
- Project Management
- Financial Stewardship
- Servant Leadership
Breathe In Breathe Out. No big deal. The catagory or label doesn’t matter as much as the purpose, which we will get to later. Now, even though no job, career or life of service is this simple, there is designed devine order in the complexity of a single cell and in the grand design of the universe. So we can keep life simply catagorized even though it is complex.
Time Of Your Life
Now assign the time of your life. Simply decide that the catagories above are assigned in order beginning with Monday and ending with Thursday.
- Nursing Profession/Monday
- Project Management/Tuesday
- Financial Stewardship/Wednesday
- Servant Leadership/Thursday
Next is “why.” The “why” of your professional life can be a simple purpose statement for each catagory. Stop letting your eyes glaze over. This is extremely important because the “why” is the passion on life and passion is drive, it is a kind of motivation that we do not have to stir up. It’s there, waiting to be discovered. It’s what the bible calls the desires of our heart and guess who gives those to us? (Psalm 37)
“My heart’s desire is to…”
- Nursing Profession/Monday “Promote health and healing with excellence in nursing”
- Project Management/Tuesday ”Be the project manager that builds a happy, productive team”
- Financial Stewardship/Wednesday ”Amaze administration with innovation, staying within budget”
- Servant Leadership/Thursday “ Lead those in my organization without being self-centered”
Don’t obsess or groan and moan, just write something because we’re moving on to…
